One of the most common local questions we hear is: Does Medicare cover dental care in Orlando? People in Kissimmee, Orange County, and Osceola County ask the same thing-especially before Medicare Annual Enrollment (AEP), when mailers mention “dental benefits.”
This article is educational only. Instant Health Help is a licensed Central Florida health insurance agency. We are not an insurance carrier or a dental office. We do not invent plan names, prices, “best plan” rankings, or savings claims. What is covered-and what you pay-depends on Original Medicare vs Medicare Advantage, your specific plan year, your dentist network (if any), and the procedure. Confirm details on Medicare.gov and with your plan documents.
Short answer (then the useful details)
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) generally does not cover routine dental care such as cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions, or dentures. There are narrow situations where dental work may be covered when it is integral to a covered medical procedure (for example, certain hospital-related cases)-those are exceptions, not a routine dental benefit.
Some Medicare Advantage plans may offer extra benefits that can include dental (and sometimes vision or hearing). Those extras vary by plan, county, and year. An Advantage plan that included a dental allowance last year may change for the next year. That is why AEP reviews matter.
We will not tell you “every Advantage plan in Orlando covers dental” or quote a dollar amount. Coverage is plan- and zip-specific.
What Original Medicare usually does not pay for
For most people in Central Florida, Original Medicare alone does not pay for:
- Routine cleanings and exams
- Fillings, crowns, or bridges
- Dentures or implants (as routine dental)
- Most periodontal (gum) treatment outside narrow medical-integration rules
If you only have Part A and Part B, plan for dental as a separate cost or look at other options (stand-alone dental insurance, cash/discount programs, or Advantage extras if you are shopping Advantage). None of those paths is automatically “best.”
When dental might connect to a medical claim
Medicare may cover certain dental services when they are an integral part of a covered medical procedure-for example, in some hospital settings tied to a covered treatment. These situations are technical and case-specific. Do not assume a routine office visit qualifies. Ask your dentist and check Medicare.gov or your plan for the exact service codes and setting.
This is not the same as a yearly cleaning benefit.
Medicare Advantage and “dental extras” in Orange & Osceola
If you have-or are considering-a Medicare Advantage plan available in your Central Florida zip:
- Extra dental benefits (if offered) may include cleanings, X-rays, or an annual allowance
- Networks matter: a benefit only helps if your dentist participates or the plan pays out-of-network in a way that works for you
- Annual maximums and waiting periods (when they apply) can limit how far the benefit goes
- Benefits can change each year-review before and during AEP (October 15-December 7)
Bring your dentist’s name and zip (Orlando, Kissimmee, or elsewhere in Orange/Osceola) when you compare. Local network fit beats a national brochure.
Practical checklist before AEP
- List the dental work you expect – Cleaning only? Crowns? Dentures? Extractions?
- Name your dentist and office zip – Orange vs Osceola availability can differ by plan.
- Note what you have now – Original Medicare only, Advantage with dental, or a separate dental policy.
- Gather last year’s Explanation of Benefits (if any) for dental-related claims.
- Ask clear questions – What is the annual dental maximum? Preventive vs major? In-network only?
- Do not rely on a postcard alone – Verify benefits in the Evidence of Coverage / Summary of Benefits for the plan year.
Related “does Medicare cover…” questions locals ask
People who ask about dental often ask next about vision, hearing aids, and long-term custodial care. Those also have different rules under Original Medicare vs possible Advantage extras. We can walk through each topic with your real providers-not generic national claims.
