Medicare dates Orlando residents should know

  • Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 through December 7: join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. Changes start January 1.
  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment, January 1 through March 31: if you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to another one or go back to Original Medicare.
  • Initial Enrollment Period: 7 months around your 65th birthday: the 3 months before your birthday month, that month, and the 3 months after.
  • Special Enrollment Periods: some life events, like moving or losing other coverage, open a separate window.

Plans can change premiums, drug lists, and networks each year, so read your Annual Notice of Change before December 7. Help with that: what to do when your ANOC arrives.

What an Orlando Medicare review covers

  • Whether your Orlando-area doctors, specialists, and hospitals are in network for the plans we compare
  • Your full prescription list, checked against each plan’s drug list and estimated yearly cost
  • Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare with a Supplement and Part D, in plain language
  • Timing your enrollment when you turn 65 or leave job-based coverage
  • Questions after you enroll, for as long as you are our client

Background reading: Original Medicare vs Medicare Advantage, review your Part D drug list, and how to check your doctor’s network.

Turning 65 in Orlando?

Your Initial Enrollment Period is 7 months long and starts 3 months before your birthday month. If you or your spouse still work and have job-based coverage, Part B timing can be different, so ask before you sign up or delay. Start with turning 65 Medicare enrollment in Florida and should you delay Part B if you still work.

Help paying Medicare costs

If money is tight, you may qualify for Extra Help with drug costs or a Medicare Savings Program that helps with Part B premiums. In Florida, Medicare Savings Programs go through DCF. We are MyACCESS certified and can help you complete that application, but DCF decides who qualifies.
